Jan 05, 2013 -- 6:47am

The Wicomico County Health Department is declaring its prescription drug drop boxes a success in their first three months of use.

Since the boxes were installed in September, residents have disposed of 297 pounds of unused and expired prescription drugs. The Health Department says that 297 pounds of prescription drugs is now off the streets, and that there was a greater need for the boxes than just the two DEA National Take Back Days each year. The boxes were set up to reduce prescription drug abuse.

The drop boxes are available during regular business hours weekdays at the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and Fruitland and Delmar Police Departments, and 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the Salisbury Police Department.
